Her own boss

Posted on July 3, 2009

The friend of mine who attended the millionaire’s course I mentioned in my earlier post has actually just lost her job. Initially, I was amazed at how well she took it in her stride.

But later I found out she’d set up her own company earlier on with some of her colleagues from work. Yes, her own little office in one of those not-too-shabby steel buildings in town.

I guess her boss figured there was a conflict of interest and had to let her go. No wonder she feels no pain. She’s her own boss now and giving her ex-boss a run for his money! Interesting bit of news there.

Not a millionaire

Posted on July 2, 2009

Recently a friend of mine was in town for a 3-day seminar on how to become a millionaire. Interesting, I thought, because I’ve come across many such courses but never bothered to go to any. For one thing, the course fees are out of my budget. For another, I’m thinking, well, if everyone who goes for such a course ends up becoming a millionaire, won’t the world be full of millionaires by now?

At any rate, my friend’s course attended was supposed to be held at a posh hotel, along the lines of a Riviera hotel. Turned out it was held at a nearby convention center to accomodate the 3000+ attendees. As I predicted, she left the course after sitting through it, reluctantly, for the first day when the course leader started hard selling stuff to them and said very little about how to become a millionaire.

She’s just glad she got free tickets to the course and didn’t have to pay the exorbitant fees. She’s not happy about having wasted her traveling expenses and time. Guess she’s given up trying to be a millionaire overnight?

Getting around is not hard

Posted on June 30, 2009

A business associate of mine was in town recently and we’d agree to meet up to discuss business. Seeing that she’s never been here before, I offered to pick her up from her hotel. But she said she’d rented a car and will meet me at the agreed venue.

Obviously I was a litte concerned as to how she would get around in such a busy and unfamiliar city. Don’t worry, she reassured me, in this day and age of gps systems, I have no problems finding my way around. So yes, I was taken aback, of course, why didn’t I think of that? I mean I’m getting lost half the time. Maybe it’s time I got one of those handy locators.

Going back on an advertised promotion

Posted on June 29, 2009

I saw a flyer for a certain brand of ice cream on sale at a grocery store I don’t usually patronize. But since they had a few other items I was interested in, I decided to make a special trip there.

When I got to the frozen section however, I couldn’t find the ice cream that was on promo so I asked a staff who happened to be nearby. He told me there was no promo.

Thinking maybe I’d made a mistake, I wandered off only to meet 2 other ladies who’d come for this same item, and they confirmed the item was indeed on promo. So they sent the staff to check with his manager.

To cut a long story short, the manager admitted they didn’t have the ice cream in the promotional twin pack and that the ad was a mistake. They had them in singles but those weren’t on promo. So we said, since we’d all come for the promo, why don’t you just sell us two singles for the price advertised?

He kept apologizing but refused to sell the items to us at promo price. We kicked up a fuss and still he refused to budge.

Can you imagine if he’d been selling ipods to a huge , frantic crowd wanting to get their hands on the promo deal and he’s telling them what he was telling us? I think he’d have brought the house down and then gotten sued for false advertising. It’s the ultimate worst in customer service.

Go away, spammers!

Posted on June 28, 2009

I’ve been receiving a lot of text ads on my cell phone lately. I’m not sure where these companies have gotten my phone number from but I can venture a fairly good guess.

They’re happily spamming me with ads of their latest promotions about everything under the sun from discount clothing to best weight loss pill to movie tickets.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a big fan of spam so I will simply delete spammy text messages, most times without even bothering to read them. Can you imagine just what a huge waste of time it is to be sifting through, not only email spam, but also phone spam as well? So spammers, go away please.

To travel or not to travel?

Posted on June 27, 2009

In my recent blog surfing, I came across several people saying their spouses are stuck overseas after their business trips because their companies are concerned about them traveling on airplanes and being exposed and exposing others to the deadly flu.

I guess there is some genuine cause for concern here. Quite frankly, we never know who is harboring the germs as it apparently takes about a week for the symptoms to show. That’s pretty scary, if you ask me, because it means a person may appear to be perfectly healthy yet not know their symptoms are yet to show.

Some people still choose to travel on holidays in spite of this. Like some friends of mine made plans for their Vegas vacations months ago and they can’t get their tickets refunded. I guess we won’t know how long this pandemic will last so to some extent, plans still have to go on. What do you think?

Maintain and protect your computer for less

Posted on June 25, 2009

Those of us who work from home don’t always have the luxury of an IT Department on hand when our computers start acting up. I can tell you first hand that carting your computer to the workshop is not an option.

Think of the time and gas money to go all the way there. Remember in an online business, your computer is your life. You can’t afford to have it sitting at some workshop for days while they figure out what’s wrong.

I’d opt for instant 24/7 LivePC support services for all my computer needs. Me and my computer stay put in my home office while the technician dials in remotely to fix my problem. How convenient is that!

Comodo offers this remote support service plus firewall and antivirus protection which gives you ease of mind seeing as how many new viruses and worms are floating out there in Cyberspace.

You can try Live PC Support free for 30 days and then if you’re happy with it, you can buy Comodo Internet Security Pro plus LivePC Support, a $99 value, for only $39.

No more parking problems

Posted on June 16, 2009

This is such a joke. I ran into an ex-coworker at dinner last weekend. There I was trying to park my minivan and suddenly there was a figure standing in the semi-darkness with arms waving and helping me manouver into the tight parking spot.

It was only when I got out that I realized it was one of my ex-coworkers. We had a good laugh at my parking skills and spent the next few minutes catching up.

He says he has no parking problems now since he traded his car in for a motorcycle since times are bad and gas is expensive. Apparently the only thing he carries around with him, besides his crash helmet, is the phone number of a really good San Jose motorcycle accident attorney just in case. Funny guy!

A chance to learn new skills

Posted on June 15, 2009

Did you notice that when times are bad, many people tend to take up courses after they lose their jobs? It’s a sort of joke amongst my friends that the money people would otherwise spend on weight loss pills can now go into upgrading themselves professionally instead since they’ll be cutting down on dining out.

I think it’s a good thing. With working people, there’s hardly the opportunity to pursue their interests outside of work. So while this may be a forced situation, on the positive side, I’m sure many are glad for the break to better themselves and learn new skills.

Left hand doesn’t know what Right hand is doing

Posted on June 14, 2009

Recently I went to the hamburger place that I’ve been patronizing every weekend for the past few months. I won’t mention names but it’s a major hamburger place that’s even got outdoor dining sets at some outlets.

The staff there pretty much know me and I was pleasantly surprised when they offered me a 10% discount on my order for being a regular customer. Since then, I’ve been asking for a similar discount every time I go there and they’ve given it to me.

Two weeks ago, I was there and as usual, I asked the counter clerk for my usual discount. Man, was I in for a shock! She made a big fuss and started speaking to me in a condescending tone of voice that there’s simply no such thing!! She asked me who had given me the discounts on my previous visits and so on.

She was rude and quite frankly, I didn’t care for how she made me look bad in front of a whole line of customers. I haven’t gone back since.

But last weekend, my nieces were in town and wanted to eat there. So I grit my teeth, went in, placed my order and again asked for my 10% discount since she wasn’t there. The guy who served me gladly gave it to me  .

Looks like that woman probably had an axe to grind with the company. Either that or the company hasn’t been clear about its polices.
