Start a greeting card business

Posted on May 27, 2005 | Leave a Comment

Last week, I think it was, I had coffee with a good friend of mine. As always, we had to see each other before she left for Scotland to visit her folks. It’s a sort of something we always do.

The exciting news, she’s making homemade greeting cards for sale. Just in time for Christmas too. Remember if it’s handmade, it takes time to make (LOL). Since she’s just starting out, she needs time to market and get the word out also. So it’s best to start early.

I can’t believe her excitement, it was sooo infectious. Soon I was wanting to know how she put the cards together and where she was getting her supplies from. Then we were on to economies of scale – whether it’d be cheaper for her to source the blank cards from Scotland (which is familiar territory to her) or have them specially made to order here.

Lots of things to think about when you’re starting a new business. And it’s really worth taking a little time to lay out your action plan for business. Decide who your target market is going to be. Source for your supplies. If you’re importing, you have to take the added time and cost into account. Check out your competition. Do the math for your pricing. Start telling people about your product. Telling people isn’t enough, have other channels for promoting and advertising your product also.

Got a creative flair? There’s lots you can do, and greeting cards is just one of the many home businesses at your fingertips. Get more ideas or start here.

If you prefer not getting your hands dirty, how about promoting an affiliate program?
