a bird’s eye view on running your global business from home

If you build it, will they come?

Posted on April 26, 2007 |

I got an email today from a long-time fellow work at home mom selling her handmade soaps on the internet. I remember visiting her brand new website in 2004.

Today she wrote to say how dejected she is that she hasn’t sold a single piece of soap online since then. This brings us to the question, if you build it, will they come?

The answer is no. Not unless you spend time and effort bringing your site to the awareness of the search engines and potential human traffic.

Driving traffic to your site takes consistent work and patience. It’s not something that happens overnight (as my friend had hoped).

Here are some things you need to do for a start:

Make your site a part of your marketing plan and promote it both online and offline.

Provide useful content on your site.

Keep your content fresh to encourage return visitors.

Use SEO techniques to increase your site’s visibility to search engines.
