Concerns about online credit card use

Posted on June 7, 2007 |

I was trying to make a hotel reservation last week to go on vacation. Everything was going fine until the customer service person started asking for my credit card information.

While I’m quite happy giving her my credit card number over the phone, I didn’t feel comfortable giving her my three-digit security code when she asked for it.

After all, it wasn’t like she was going to be charging my card right away. She would still have to wait till I personally check in before she initiates the credit card payment anyways.

The point is I really have my reservations about giving out financial information over the phone or the internet. That’s the reason I don’t do online payments for my bills and credit cards although I’m well aware of the convenience of payment transfers between savings and credit card, and the best buy savings from shopping online.

Maybe I’m missing out on the best of technology right now. But I need to wait till I feel really comfortable with the privacy and security of internet transactions.

I think it has to do with all the horror stories about identity theft that I seem to hear and read about every so often. It’s ridiculous identity thefts are standing in the way of modern conveniences.
