Spamming gets you nowhere

Are you being inundated with spam these days? I opened up my Wordpress to 17 spam comments. If this is too much, I don’t know what is. Akismet catches most of it but some still do manage to get through.
I really don’t understand why people even bother to do this. If they’re trying to advertise for free, obviously spamming someone with 17 copies of the same stuff isn’t going to get their comment read.
Lately spammers have gotten more creative. Yep, human-generated spam has to be more creative than bot-generated ones, right? Some are posting under their company names with a link to their company and one or more links in the comment itself.
Others are posting under individual names (to sound more legit, I guess) with a link to their site and a somewhat logical comment sometimes with an embedded link. No matter how cleverly disguised, spam is still spam and go where all spam go.
