If you’re unsure whether it’s a phishing email

Posted on February 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment

These days, it’s getting harder to distinguish between a phishing email and a genuine one. I received one sometime ago which I wasn’t sure about. I subsequently forgot all about it until today. I went back and reread the email and it sounded genuine. But I couldn’t be sure.

I compare that email with some others I’d received from the same company, and found that the legit ones all had graphic headers and the one that was suspect did not. So this could be a hint.

I received another email today from another company that again, I was unsure about. It looked genuine enough but then, just like the first email, it was asking for personal information to be sent to them.

The safest thing to do in circumstances like these when you’re unsure, it’s best to contact the company to seek confirmation about whether such an email was indeed sent out by them. Quite honestly, I don’t appreciate the extra work but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
