Misled and overcharged

Don’t you just hate it when businesses mislead you by placing price cards of almost similar items right next to each other so that if you don’t read carefully, you’d be misled into buying the more expensive item thinking it’s on sale?

That’s what happened to me this morning at the grocery store. The promotional price card was right under the Nestle yoghurt but the price was meant for the Dutch Lady yoghurt which was on the lower shelf. The brand names were in a much smaller font so I missed reading them entirely. At any rate, a shopper can’t be expected to scrutinize the price card before buying.

Knowing this grocery store only too well, I specifically pointed out to the cashier that the yoghurt was a promotional item. She nodded so I assumed she knew. Right out of checkout, I discovered I’d paid more for the yoghurt than was advertised.

She sent me to Customer Service to get it sorted out. Obviously she had no idea what was going on. Customer Service took 15 minutes to walk to the shelf to physically check the price card! And came back to announce the promotion was for Dutch Lady, not Nestle.

Should I be fuming? Yes, this is not the first time I’ve been misled and overcharged as a result. Earlier on, just before I went through checkout, I met a man who had just lodged a complaint about one product having two price cards. He was complaining that it was false advertising, misleading and confusing the customer.
