Making those PCs last

Being a work at home mom, I can’t afford to buy each of my kids a brand new PC. Although each of my kids has his/her own PC to work on (so there’ll be less fighting when there’s school projects, term papers, etc), theirs are all hand-me-downs.
Because I have an online business to run, I always get the newest PC and pass along the older ones to my kids.
Though we’d love a high-end Sony Vaio, right now we can only afford PCs that are industry-standard so the parts are compatible and we can use them interchangeably on any of our PCs.
We won’t be buying any new PCs for now. With the current economic uncertainties, my budget is taking quite a beating so we’ll just have to get as much mileage out of our PCs as possible.
