Going back on an advertised promotion

Posted on June 29, 2009 | Leave a Comment

I saw a flyer for a certain brand of ice cream on sale at a grocery store I don’t usually patronize. But since they had a few other items I was interested in, I decided to make a special trip there.

When I got to the frozen section however, I couldn’t find the ice cream that was on promo so I asked a staff who happened to be nearby. He told me there was no promo.

Thinking maybe I’d made a mistake, I wandered off only to meet 2 other ladies who’d come for this same item, and they confirmed the item was indeed on promo. So they sent the staff to check with his manager.

To cut a long story short, the manager admitted they didn’t have the ice cream in the promotional twin pack and that the ad was a mistake. They had them in singles but those weren’t on promo. So we said, since we’d all come for the promo, why don’t you just sell us two singles for the price advertised?

He kept apologizing but refused to sell the items to us at promo price. We kicked up a fuss and still he refused to budge.

Can you imagine if he’d been selling ipods to a huge , frantic crowd wanting to get their hands on the promo deal and he’s telling them what he was telling us? I think he’d have brought the house down and then gotten sued for false advertising. It’s the ultimate worst in customer service.
