glimpses of doggie year

doggieToday’s the third day of the Year of the Dog. Apparently scores of people have been buying pet dogs recently in the hopes that it will bring them good luck.

The SPCA has raised concerns about people who may only want the dogs for good luck but who may not care for them properly. If you want your dog to bring you good luck and prosperity, shower it with loving care and give it a good home ;) .

For those who’re less enthusiastic about having to care for a real life dog, there’s always the cuddly soft toy alternative. Woof! Woof!

pot of goldThese are the ‘pots of gold’ I’ve been giving away as gifts this year. I found out about these when I myself got a pot from a friend as a gift.

Each ‘pot’ holds about eight large mandarin oranges. The packaging is very presentable, easily carried in one hand, and has the perfect inscription on it that says “Pot of Gold”. Now who wouldn’t be happy to receive a pot of gold, especially if it’s edible gold  ?

fireworksJust to give you a ‘taste’ of the raw fish salad I’ve been raving about.

It’s a colorful combination of shredded pickled veggies with a generous dressing of sweet sour plum sauce topped off with slices of raw fish. Yum! It’s my favorite CNY dish. It’s so simple yet so tasty.

Have you tried this dish before?

frenzy weekend ahead

You wouldn’t believe, I haven’t done my Chinese New Year (CNY) shopping. I honestly had no idea CNY is next Sunday! Well, it’s not that I didn’t know, it’s more like I didn’t expect the days to go by so quick. The last time I looked in the calendar, it seemed I still had weeks to get everything done. Between work, family and business, I’ve lost track of time!

All I’ve got are a couple of crates of mandarin oranges and 12 pineapples for the pineapple tarts. It’s a good thing I’ve bought the children’s new clothes during the year-end school holidays. New clothes and shoes are low priority items these days because the kids get new clothes all year round anyways.

So what I really need to catch up on are the food and drinks for visitors. CNY is all about reciprocation. If someone visits you, you must visit them back. If someone gives your kids an “ang pow” (red envelopes containing a token gift of money), you must give their kids also. If someone gives you a gift, you must return the favor.

I really need to get everything together this weekend. It’s the last weekend before we welcome the Year of the Dog. I’m pretty sure there’ll be a feeding frenzy out there at the stores. So I’d best get my shopping list and jogging shoes ready  . I’ll be back.
