finishing up my novel

It’s the end of Nanowrimo and I’ve just made it across the 25,000-word line. Which isn’t half-bad considering how busy and distracted I’ve been this month. Mine is a simple but colorful story about a girl growing up on a small island.

First off, I’m going out to celebrate with Heather and the kids. Then I’m going to hang up my feet and take a break next week. After that, what I’d really like to do is to take some time to finish up the book since I’m already halfway there.

Seeing what a fine job Heather is doing with the ezines, I’ve asked her to keep doing what she’s been doing with the ezines for now… and she has agreed. Love ya, Heather, can’t thank you enough.

Meantime I’ll be updating this blog on a regular basis. So this is where you’ll find me talking about all the things I used to talk about in my ezines. Please stop by and visit with me anytime. See what I’m up to, say hi or even to give me a kick in the butt if you catch me slacking.

Happy Thanksgiving

I’ve been looking forward to Thanksgiving which is something that’s not celebrated here but which I celebrate entirely for my own greedy reasons ;) . I love turkey, what better reason is there to celebrate? Some years, I continue to celebrate Thanksgiving with a second or third turkey weeks after the actual event is over. That’s how much I love turkey.

Last year, we didn’t have turkey. The price had doubled and I honestly wasn’t prepared to spend that much on appeasing my tastebuds. So I decided to do without it. Having missed it last year, I’m all geared up this year and was considering forking out whatever it takes. Gotta have that turkey, turkey!

But guess what, I can’t find any turkeys at the grocery stores. “They’ll only be in next month in time for Christmas,” the store clerk tells me. What?? No Thanksgiving turkey! Boo-hoo. Guess I won’t be celebrating Thanksgiving then….

.. but here’s wishing everyone who is, A Very Happy Thanksgiving! Think of me when you’re gobbling that turkey. *drool, drool*

plogging along with grace

It’s the dawn of nanoday 21. That makes a grand total of 9 days till the November 30 deadline. At this point, it has become very clear to me that I’m never going to make the magic number.

For starters, I’m taking way too many breaks – most of them green tea breaks but many spent surfing other nanowriters’ sites to see how they are doing. Well, okay so I’m looking for some consolation here *tee hee*.

I’ve also started on a new hobby – collecting words and counting them. Every word I add to my story is a cause for celebration. It’s not that the words are slow in coming – actually they spew forth every time I sit down at my PC. It’s just that I can’t seem to find long enough stretches of time to write uninterrupted.

And basically that’s what my main problem is. Half the time, I’m out and about doing 1001 other things while the book is sitting in the backburner. I’m plogging away every chance I get. And I guess that’s what I’ll be doing for the next week or so. No burning the midnight oil, though, hey, I need my beauty sleep… no, really.

the obstacle race

I always thought I was a pro at chasing minutes until now. This is one race which has left me puffing and panting for air. Today’s day 17 of Nanowrimo and here I am, still plogging along just below 17,000 words, a long long way from my destination of 50,000 words.

Actually I’m not sure what made me sign up for Nano. Guess it was just another of Kit’s brilliant ideas. As if I don’t have enough on my plate already. I just know it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and well, like I always say, if you don’t try, you’ll never know (if you can actually write a book in 30 days!). Ow! Now I know, it ain’t that easy *sob*.

Not that I don’t have the story in my head. I do, it’s been there for ages and it’s a great story (more about that in another post). I was thinking it’d be as simple as sitting down for a few weeks and letting it all spill out. Ironically it’s the sitting down that I’m having most trouble with. With my busy schedule, it’s really hard to sit down for long enough to come up with any substantial writing.

But I’m working on it. Mostly by barking at the kids like an army general – get the door, turn down that music, clean up the mess, remind me to buy milk. And mean mommy wishes they could drive too!

Well, there’s still time. I haven’t given up yet. Who knows, slow but steady might still finish the race, eh? Okay, that’s just me trying to console myself.

I’ll be updating when I can so do check back. You’re welcome to leave me a comment to cheer me on. Goodness knows I need all the moral support I can get.
