the mandarin lady strikes again

I did it again this morning. Handed out mandarins to the sweeper and another guard, and the sun just came up from their faces.

I love it. I get a warm feeling from this even though mandarins are just a small token. It’s not like I’m giving away heaps of money or anything.

Still the feeling is a nice one. Every year before Chinese New Year, I send rice and oil to the temple. But because I just leave them there and don’t stick around to see them distributed or eaten or used, I don’t get that warm fuzzy feeling I get from seeing someone’s face light up with surprise and delight when they get an orange!

the singles inquisition

Last week, over the Chinese New Year holidays, I met up with some old classmates from school. This is the only annual gathering we have because everyone is just too busy otherwise to get together and play catch-up.

While many of us are moms now, there are quite a number who’re still swinging singles. Every year, the highlight of our gathering is to subject the unmarried ones to what we affectionately call the Singles Inquisition (our version of the Spanish Inquisition LOL).

We bombard these poor women with questions like “So is there a special someone yet?” or “Let me read your palm and see if there’s a tall, dark and handsome lurking in your future” or “So your folks given up on those wedding bells already?”

It’s all done in good fun and we come away with a bunch of good laughs to last us a year. Over time, the girls have been coming up with more and more creative answers like, “Yes, my mom tried to marry me off to a 98-year-old man just last week!”

This year, someone decided to get smart on us and said, “I decided to try online dating. Guess what, I’ve found myself a hot guy from Iceland!” This one sure takes the cake. We’re still laughing.

the mandarin lady

I brought a bag of mandarin oranges with me to work today with the intention of distributing them to some of the people there. No, not those who work in the office but those other staff who don’t work at desks.

Those who work in the cushy office would no doubt have had their fill of mandarins and big lunches. But people like the guards and the sweepers were the ones I wanted to share a little festive joy with.

Strangely enough today, I didn’t meet any of the regulars that I often exchange greetings with when I drove in. I couldn’t very well lug a bagful of mandarins around with me. So I left the bag in my car.

After work, as I reached the exit where I had to swipe my card to leave, I finally saw a familiar face. He’s a guard I’ve never had the occasion to speak to but I know him on sight.

It’s hard to make eye contact with him but I always try to acknowledge him or nod at him. On a good day, he might nod back ever so slightly or raise his hand in a half-hearted wave. Over the months, I’ve learnt not to expect a response from him.

Clearly he’s not the friendliest person or maybe he’s just a shy guy. But I’m there to judge him. I imagine he must have his own reasons for his rather gloomy disposition. I just thought it might be nice if he could just manage a smile now and then.

Today, when I handed him a mandarin orange, I expected him to lower his head and his eyes quickly, as usual. I was wrong. The mandarin had a magic effect. As he reached out for the fruit, an unexpected smile broke from his face.

It seemed like I might have just brought a little sunshine into his rather mundane existence. Encouraged by his response, the mandarin lady will strike again tomorrow to spread a little more festive sunshine. The bag of mandarins is still in my car waiting to do their magic. Wish me luck.

all things tech plus tronics

My postie friend, Jimi, has a great new blog over at JMH Techtronics. Interesting word, Techtronics, I think so too (LOL). Jimi aptly coined this word because on this blog, he talks about all things technology and electronic.

For instance, while I know next to nothing about Playstations and have never been within 2 feet of one, Jimi’s getting close to buying a Playstation 3. So I’m pretty sure he’ll have lots more to talk about in that department, eh, Jimi? Not to mention the Nintendo’s.

hibernation realized

I wasn’t going to make a big deal of this. But being the die-hard mall crawler and shopaholic that I am (despite my hectic schedule, it’s amazing how I can still squeeze in the time to go to every sale in town LOL), I have to put it down on record that I haven’t left my house once in the past five days.

Incredible, isn’t it? I amaze even myself. Since Wednesday, the kids and I haven’t stepped out of the house. We’ve had all our meals at home, and just hung out at home surfing the net, watching TV, having afternoon tea…

My dreams of hibernation have come true. This is a real change from our usual CNY routine, a real nice change, in fact. We only had visitors and returned their visits all within the first 3 days of CNY, and had the rest of the time to ourselves.

I enjoyed hanging my feet up and just taking my time about everything. The phone didn’t ring. My alarms didn’t go off. Our meals were eaten slowly with lots of mandarins and laughter in between. The days were long and lazy. Hmm, it’s rare indeed that a minute chaser gets to not have to keep an eye on the clock all the time.

I’m all nicely rested and ready to face the rush again… tomorrow!! Aaargh…

how to complain effectively

Being out and about as much as I am, I get really mad when I buy something that doesn’t work which then requires me to do a massive amount of time to get it fixed. I just don’t have the time to follow up on things like that.

If you notice, many of the things we buy these days don’t last. Things that are supposed to work don’t work. Calling the company and complaining can be a huge waste of time, especially with those whou couldn’t care two hoots about customer service or their corporate reputation.

If it helps any, I’ve just discovered some quick tips how to complain effectively, as suggested by a lifestyle guru (I forget her name, sorry). Complain effectively? Boy, has it come to such a level that even complaining has to be polished down to a fine art?

1. Present your problem clearly by giving specific details of what’s wrong with the product you’ve purchased. If you have days and dates, that’s even better. Quoting them will strengthen your case.

2. Tell them why this problem is bothering you.

3. Make some suggestion to them as to how they may help you overcome this problem.

4. Finally, tell them what consequence will take place if they fail to resolve your problem satisfactorily - something to the effect that you will take your business elsewhere in the future.

Good luck with your complaining. If you’d like to share any tips that’ve worked for you before, feel free to leave them in the comment box.

insurance reminders

The first of our insurance payments for the year are due. Well, almost. The thing is if you don’t pay within the grace period, they lapse. I’ve had a couple of close calls before when I clear forgot to make payment.

I’ve gotten more wary since. So I get them lined up early on my ever-growing to-do list so I can get them paid off the first chance I get.

I keep the statements in my car, so if I’m passing through that part of town, I can just stop by the insurance office anytime, get them paid and struck off my list.

With my car insurance, it’s different because the company calls to remind me a month before my policy expires. Bless their great customer service. For a busy mom like me, this is surely a big help.

more pocket change coming

Okay, here’s the thing, right? I’ve started making some pocket change from blogging. So I’m on a roll here and have just signed up with Blogsvertise which from what I hear is another popular avenue for paid blogging.

The sign up is a cinch and what I really love about it is that they don’t ask you for a whole lot of irrelevant personal information like some of the other companies. This makes the sign-up process really short and sweet. I was done in like 30 seconds. No stress at all.

After your blog gets approved, they’ll start sending you opportunities to post about and you’re pretty much on your way. I haven’t started blogging for them yet but from the sign up and their promise of a 24 hour approval timeframe, I’m pretty sure I’ll be one happy blogger soon ;)

lunches

It’s been a quiet day, just the one I like it. The kids are all home. They have a week off from school for the CNY break… which is always nice as it means, no bus runs for me.

We pottered around the house and went out to lunch at around 2. Yes, rather late for lunch but that’s because we slept in and had a late breakfast.

On the way home from lunch, we stopped by for groceries. We’re having rice noodles with tomyam soup tomorrow. So it was quite timely that I found enoki mushrooms at a promotional price of 89 cents. I grabbed 3 packets of it.

These are the mushrooms with a tiny head and a long slender stem. They’re rather bland on their own but dunk them in steaming tomyam soup and they’re heavenly. Can’t wait to pig out tomorrow (LOL).

moon and stars

This year, the older cousins who are still single, bore the brunt of the ‘merciless’ jokes initiated by the elders in an effort to get them married off.

Once you get to the ripe old age of 30 and you’re still not married, you can almost bet everyone in the family will be on your case the minute they see you (LOL).

The chiding was all in good fun but I couldn’t help feeling slightly sorry for my cousins. I guess love is not something you can summon up just like that at a moment’s notice.

The moon and stars have to be aligned for love to spark, that’s what I always say. And for some, the moon and stars are just plain taking their own sweet time to line up (LOL).
