island vacation (3) - glorious street food
Penang is famous for its rich variety of street food. On previous trips, we’d had to visit fast food joints because the kids hadn’t acquired a taste for street food.
But this time around, they’re older and definitely much more adventurous in terms of food. We were really spoilt for choice. Down the road from our hotel, there’s a famous stretch of open-air eating places right along the beach.
The place was teaming with the weekend crowd out for a great gastronomic experience. The food was sumptuous and very inexpensive.
We had fried noodles, fishball noodle soup, hot spicy noodles in tamarind soup, hot spicy noodles in shrimp-based soup, baked fish, chicken and beef kebabs, spicy fried oyster omelet. Of course, I couldn’t walk away without sipping a fresh young coconut. Man, we had a street food feast!
The next day, we had dinner at another street food place called the Beach Cafe. This was on the grounds of a sea-facing mansion which years ago, belonged to my classmate’s uncle. I was a little sad to see such a beautiful house reduced to an eating place.
But the food was rather good there. We had beef ball noodle soup, spicy fried noodles, more kebabs, dumplings and lots of fruit juice.
To cut a long story short, this vacation was for pigs. I think we all put on several pounds each just from gobbling good food every meal time. Now if you’ll excuse me, I really need to get to the gym. Darn, I can’t even fit into my gym shorts anymore?
