fake-’em friends

Last week, I met up with an old and dear friend at the hotel where I was vacationing. Gosh, you should’ve seen us. We just couldn’t stop talking for hours till way past midnight.

We relived old memories of our schooldays and laughed about the good times we had. I’ve come to the conclusion that some of the best friends a person makes in their lifetime are those from school.

Somehow the people from work and social settings have, for me at least, never turned out into such solid friends. The friends from school were honest-to-goodness and had no ulterior motives for wanting to be your friends.

But with the ones from work, there’s just no telling when or how they’re planning to stab you in the back or take you out even as they smile and pat you on the back. That’s the whole sad and ugly truth. I’m getting the goosebumps just thinking about it.

Then there are those fair weather friends who are constantly there when you’re doing well, but are all but gone from your life when you’re down. Come to think of it, there are some family members who fit into this category as well.

I have plenty of both these types of fake-’em friends (who needs them?) but only a precious handful from school who’ve been there for as long as I’ve known them, and she is one of them.
