the eccentric in me
I’d like to think I’m a regular person. But there’ve been times when I’ve found it extremely hard to keep my mildly eccentric streak out of sight.
Like my taste for ugly handbags, for instance. It all started at a store in Hong Kong when I chanced upon a black handbag, much like the ones physicians carried around on their house calls in the old days. It came complete with a bronzed rim mouth and downward-locking clasps.
It was love at first sight even as I declared, “gosh, that’s the ugliest thing ever, I just gotta have it!” That was how it, and many others, subsequently came to be in my possession. And so started my long-standing career of collecting the ugliest handbags I’m so proud to be seen with
.
Strangely enough, the ugliness stops there. I have no interest in ugly clothes or ugly shoes, though I’m no stranger to doing things that others perceive as being wierd. Like painting each fingernail a different color. Alternate blue and pink. Or a different color on each of the five nails on each hand.
I know folks are being polite when they say I’m wierd when they mean eccentric. It’s an eccentricity that stems from my wildly creative and defiantly non-conformist nature rather than the need to impress or be noticed. So take me or leave me
!

That is so funny! You just have personality! Aren’t afraid to be who you are!
I like the idea of painting 20 different colours into all the nails..finger as well as toe nail!!
I’ll take !
Those handbags are not only in style, they are very expensive ($200-300). I have seen variations at ebays.com and buybags.com. So you were a trailblazer!
@Karen
I’m not afraid, but I scare some people LOL.
@gautami
No worries about your nails not matching your dress, that’s for sure
@spacedlaw
Thanks, teehee.
@JHS
You’re right, ugly handbags don’t come cheap. Because no one wants them, they have to sell them as antiques LOL.
I’m not sure, but I think “eccentric” sounds like a more polite word to use than “weird,” but that’s just me. I’ll claim to be both. Love your choice in bags. I now use a canvas one that’s supposed to be a tote bag. I have almost nothing in it, and it suits me just fine.
@Patois
I love canvas bags too, the ones I can doodle on and uglify in my free time
That is hilarious. A friend and I used to by random presents for other friends by going to this particular op-shop and purchasing something revolting, like a formal lacy granny hat that sticks to your head liek a helmet hideous! But so funny when the unwitting friend discovered her ugly gift – oh to be 14 again (no thanks)
I would have to say that those handbags are actually very cool! I love people who have no need to be noticed and don’t conform to what everyone else thinks is cool!
