some cat lover

At one time, I was complaining about how there seems to be stray cats running around my neighborhood and littering up the place. There still are, no thanks to one of the guys down the street who is apparently such a cat lover that he just can’t stop feeding the cats.

Well, if he’s such a cat lover, how come he doesn’t have any pet cats of his own? You know, like keep them in a cat condo at home and pamper them with a luxurious lifestyle that’s the envy of all the strays in the neighborhood?

Some cat lover!

of acne and nagging

I gotta tell you, it’s not easy getting my teens on a facial cleansing routine. I’ve got bottles of cleansers sitting in the bathroom and it’s become almost routine to nag, nag and nag. And I’m not even a naggy mom to start with.

But it’s either that or having to deal with acne treatment later. I don’t know which is worse. What I’ve noticed though is that at some point, either the routine or the nagging actually does work.

The day someone starts taking care of his/her face and following the routine that mom prescribes, you know that someone or something at school has happened at school that suddenly makes them want to look their best! Problem solved!

do-good neighbor

Remember my good neighbor who always cooks what I like to eat and brings it over at around lunchtime? Well, I haven’t seen her lately because she’s so busy helping some charitable organization collect junk… for resale.

I’ve got several plastic bags in my kitchen where I’m keeping used bottles and containers to give her. These go to the center that she works for where they’re sorted and sold cheaply to recycling centers.

The same goes for old clothes. I have a few bags sitting in the storeroom containing clothes that the kids have outgrown but that I couldn’t bear to give away, some fairly new clothes we’d received as presents which were too small to begin with and even my old maternity clothing which now look so outdated I’m not even sure anyone would want to wear.

a guy and his car

I’ve started to notice that people are changing cars almost as often as they’re changing clothes. Well, most people except for an uncle of mine who still drives around in his 25-year-old Honda.

He frequently gets offers from mechanics who want to buy his car for its almost-vintage value but he vehemently refuses to part with it.

Not that I think he would, he’s so proud of it. He has been servicing his car regularly throughout the years and his Honda Radiator is still in tip-top condition.

runaround parenting

Whoa, it looks like another busy, busy, busy weekend coming up. My Saturday’s all booked up for the children’s school events.

At some point, I’m sure I’ll figure out whose school I should be at at what time but until then, I’m still in a daze.

It’s such a coincidence that all their schools decided to plan their sports days and report card days on that one same day.

Pity parents like us who have to run around trying to attend all the events. I don’t like to play favorites so on days like this, I really do try to make an effort to be there for every one of my kids’ events.

pondering living room furniture

teakbenchI know of some folks who are just plain strange. Or maybe I’m the strange one here but when I see someone having a beautiful set of teak patio furniture in their living room, it gets me all curious.

Well, unless someone tells me it’s the done thing these days, I’m going to go on thinking that there’s a difference between living room furniture and patio furniture.

Personally I’d prefer softer, more comfortable furniture inside rather than a hard piece of wood to sit on, even with a cushion or two thrown in.

But we have to factor in the weather in outdoor furniture, I guess that’s why you would need something strong and resistant like teak. But I could be wrong. Maybe it’s a new trend now, who knows?

peeking out from under my oyster shell

I can be such a dodo bird sometimes. You know, I’ve come across many shops selling pearls, yes, only pearls, in places like Hong Kong but I never gave them so much as a second look.

freshwater pearlsWhy? Because I’m not a really, really big fan of pearls, reason being that I always think of them all as being white, bland and boring. After all, life in a clammy old oyster can’t be all that exciting, can it now  ?

Silly me, where have I been? I didn’t know cultured and freshwater pearls come in such vibrant colors and that they don’t necessarily have to be white and lifeless. Maybe it’s time I came out of my oyster shell.

pretty isn’t everything

Let’s face it, nobody likes dirty toilets. The stories I’ve been hearing from my kids are totally gross. Not to mention that some of the toilet stalls are badly in need of more than just a bit of cleaning up.

The strangest thing though seems to be that the school is more interested in putting up wallpaper in the bathrooms than fixing the faulty faucets and aging door hardware.

So, like my kids say, what’s the point of prettying up the place when the most important parts of the toilets aren’t working properly. And you know what, I have to agree with them.

camping memories

I was digging in my storeroom for a sports bag when I came across some old camping gear that I’ve had for years. With that came a flood of camping memories. Since I grew up on an island, the camps were mostly on the beach.

Strangely it’s the pleasant memories that come to mind, not the ones about having to line up for hours to use the only public bathroom around for miles.

The cookouts were the most fun. But I gotta tell you, trying to start a fire from scratch with the sea breeze blowing is not, repeat not, an easy thing. It’s doubly hard on an empty stomach, knowing that by the time we get this fire going, we’d have fainted from hunger  .

But once we got the fire started, the cooking was great fun. Eating what we’d cooked was quite disastrous unless you don’t mind every bite being crunchy from the sand that’d gotten into the food while we were cooking  .
