These days, with the number of malicious ware flying around, it’s best not to download file attachments and documents that you receive from friends and people in general without first scanning them for viruses and spyware.

The risk of them being infected is pretty high because people don’t seem to think very much about keeping their computers protected from malicious ware. They’re more worried about their laptops, etc being stolen.

Even if they have NOD32 security software installed, for example, they often forget to keep it updated with the latest definition files. So the newest malicious ware can still get through. So the thing is to be diligent with updates and upgrades as well.
