more than a nurse’s guide to good living

I know many people think H1N1 is a bunch of overhype but being a mother of school-going kids, I have no choice but to be on the alert. I was doing a bit of research on the internet when I came across Scrubs, the nurse’s guide to good living.

At first, it didn’t look to me like I would find anything of interest there since I’m not a nurse but I was pleasantly surprised to find it’s a site with a certain warmth about it and has sections that touch on lifestyle and living that many of us can relate to.

I also found a very relevant article about swine flu with information on how to avoid swine flu, how you would know if you had it, what to do in the event of an outbreak and where to check for the latest updates. Exactly what I was hoping to find.

I also found the comments section useful because you can read other people’s thoughts and concerns that can probably help to allay some of your own. All in all, it’s a pretty well-rounded site that focuses on all aspects of living. I’m definitely going to have to check out the beauty and news and entertainment sections later when I have time.

tubes are in!

I confess, I’ve been trawling the malls. There’s just too many mid-year sales tempting me… and you know what, about every fifth woman I bump into at the mall seems to be wearing a tube…

… so I’m guessing (just a wild guess  ) that tubes must be in this season. This is a really classic tube dress that I found at iThreads where they offer free shipping on designer brands so you can save some money there.

Go check them out if you have some event coming up or even if you just want to deck your spring closet with a few trendy in-season pieces. I love the shimmery grape color of this dress, don’t you?

enough with the stick shifts, already!

I thought I could go back to driving a manual car. Just like that. No sweat.

I was wrong!

Stick shifts and manual transmission?? Aargh!

This morning, I dropped off my minivan, at the mechanic’s and thought I’d get her back by evening. Turns out I wouldn’t get her back till tomorrow. Shucks. I hate leaving my car at the mechanic’s overnight especially since I need her to get to the gym, bad.

So happens a friend of mine has a spare car sitting around this week. He warned me that “it’s manual, can you handle it?”

“Sure,” I replied. “No problem, I’ve driven a manual before…” twelve years ago.

I hopped into the car, adjusted the seat and mirrors, turned the ignition and was all set to zoom off into the sunset. And I would’ve too, if I could just get that darned steering wheel to budge.

It was like I was trying to drag a plane out of his driveway. It felt like a ton! After a few futile turns, I just sat there laughing and laughing so hard tears were streaming down my face. It was crazy. There was just no way I was going anywhere in that car!!

Just as well that he called to see how I was doing. “Hey, how’s my car treating you? Great little number, huh? Just don’t rob the bank in it!” he chuckled.

“If I did rob the bank, I’d be a sitting duck!”

So much for feeling gung ho. I don’t know how I ever drove a manual before but one thing’s for sure, there’s no turning back now.

ya win some, ya lose some

I jumped on the scale at the gym today and noticed, for the first time in many years, that I’ve lost about 3.5 pounds. Yikes! Nope, I’m certainly NOT trying to lose weight.

The only thing I’ve done is stay off meat for the past week. I’m on a self-imposed vegetarian diet for a month. Again, I’m not trying to lose weight because I’m at my ideal weight for my height! This vegetarian diet is for religious reasons  .

If you’ve been trying to lose weight forever and never really succeeded to your satisfaction, try going vegetarian. It worked for me (though that’s not my goal). Try it. Let me know if it works for you.
