almost perfect

I had lunch with my son on a small balcony overlooking a lake this afternoon. It was quite surreal being in the midst of all that greenery smack in the middle of the city. Birds flew overhead as we ate and although there were no swans on the lake, there could well have been. It was almost perfect except for the fact that we were sitting under the blazing sun in 95+ degree weather  .

have you watched Shrek yet?

The kids and I watched the latest sequel last night and I have to say it’s a big improvement over the previous one where I left the cinema with a very vague impression of what was going on in the movie. At least with this one, there’s food for thought and it deals with a very relevant topic in our rushed lives. I won’t spoil the fun for you but if you have kids, you should watch it with them  .

is it like in the movies?

And so what’s this with the US dollar swinging up and down? I guess it’s true what I heard someone say the other day that it’s better to buy gold bullion since it’s much more stable. Gold is available in convenient sizes these days as in coins which you can easily stash away. I used to think that if you buy gold, you had to have it in those huge bars that we see in movies being transported in trailers. Apparently not so. Well, until I can actually afford to be investing in gold, I guess I won’t know  !?

hopefully an end to heavy school bags

For years, the schools have been talking about reducing the weight of school bags but I’m beginning to doubt anything is ever going to be done. It’s been all talk and no action.

My girls’ school bags weigh a ton and it’s heavy even for me. It’s crazy to see younger kids with backpacks that are even bigger than them. I’ve gotten the girls to split the load and carry two bags instead of one. Still it’s really bad for their backs.

I think I’m just going to bite the bullet and sign them up for a school locker next year. It’s not cheap but it doesn’t look like we have a choice. More and more students are opting for school lockers so I have to get the girls to book one early.

crazy weekend

Whoa, that was some crazy weekend. We were running about town non-stop from Friday evening through Sunday night. Is there really so much to do on a weekend  ? Well, it’s actually easy to build up a crazy to-do list like mine.

It happens when (1) you have 3 teens who can’t drive (2) you procrastinate and let errands and deadlines build up and (3) you feel so guilty you gotta try and tackle everything all in one weekend. See, easy, right  ?

when an unexpected expense pops up

I’m sure we’ve all, at one time or another, been through the occasional rough patch when the car breaks down unexpectedly, or we’ve had some unforeseen expense. If you read my previous post, I drove over a rock and ripped a hole in the undercarriage of my car. OMG I could’ve cried. I had to pay for the tow truck and the repair works pronto.

You know, little emergencies like that when we’ve all needed some quick cash to tie us over. No shame in that. Except that borrowing from friends and family once too often can sometimes be a little inconvenient.

These are the instances when Payday Loans can be especially helpful. Borrowing from the bank may be a bit too much of red tape and time so they’re not the best option. A payday loan lender is probably a better bet for small emergencies that require quick cash.

In any event, living beyond one’s means is never a good thing and I don’t recommend it. Instead we should plan and budget and try to manage within those limits. That’s what I teach my kids. But where a financial emergency comes up that’s beyond our control, those are the instances, I think, when it’s okay to borrow.

beware of rocks!

This has not been a good day. I had to send my minivan into the workshop again because it’s making funny sounds. I hate that when it happens because it’s so distracting and I keep wondering where the sound is coming from. The workshop was a nightmare and Mr Mechanic was too busy to attend to me so I ended waiting for over an hour before he even looked at my car  !

After taking a brief look, he suggested I send my car in next week so he can spend more time isolating the problem. So off I went, having wasted an entire morning. I was driving along the highway when I saw what I thought was a clump of old newspapers on the road. I didn’t have time to swerve and drove over it. Turned out the newspapers were a rock and I busted the oil cover or something and my minivan had to be towed in for repairs *sobs*! What a crappy thing to happen.

did anyone say sunny?

Well, sunny is an understatement. It’s blazing hot here. Every day. We’re hitting the mid-90’s and quite frankly, we’re slobbing on the sunblock like we hit an oil field in our backyard. I have to keep reminding the kids to drink up and keep their hats on. I don’t mind the heat and humidity so long as the kids don’t start coming down with fever and flu and missing school because of it. How’s the weather where you’re at?
