we won!

My son and I were walking past a promotional booth at the mall today. The MC was pulling up people randomly from the crowd to answer a question about their product and win prizes.

All of a sudden, the MC stopped us in our tracks, pointed the microphone at my son and asked him a question. Of course we had no idea what was going on but my son gave the correct answer and won a keychain, a fridge magnet and a pen!

Small prizes, yes but we were practically jumping for joy. We’ve never done anything like this before and we certainly didn’t expect to win!! Yay!!

camping memories

I was digging in my storeroom for a sports bag when I came across some old camping gear that I’ve had for years. With that came a flood of camping memories. Since I grew up on an island, the camps were mostly on the beach.

Strangely it’s the pleasant memories that come to mind, not the ones about having to line up for hours to use the only public bathroom around for miles.

The cookouts were the most fun. But I gotta tell you, trying to start a fire from scratch with the sea breeze blowing is not, repeat not, an easy thing. It’s doubly hard on an empty stomach, knowing that by the time we get this fire going, we’d have fainted from hunger  .

But once we got the fire started, the cooking was great fun. Eating what we’d cooked was quite disastrous unless you don’t mind every bite being crunchy from the sand that’d gotten into the food while we were cooking  .

how I created my own logo

I remember my first attempt at creating my own business card when I first decided to freelance from home. It was probably the ugliest card ever, so boring and uncreative. It almost kept me away from logo design forever  .

Actually there is another way. I’ve just tried it out myself at LogoYes.com and it really couldn’t be easier and more fun.

First off, I get to decide what brand or image I want my card to portray – high-tech or bold or with a flair. Obviously being one so creative  , I chose flair and the next screen brought me to a whole range of industries to choose from.

As y’all know, I’m a minute-chasing mom always in a rush, the sun-dial was perfect. I wanted something cool, so a sun-dial is definitely much exciting than a regular old watch or clock.

Next I added the words Minute Chaser using a font that I thought would be casual yet legible. At the last screen, I played around with the text and images to achieve the effect I wanted.

There now, a few clicks and I was done. I can’t believe how easy and flexible it is. I made several logos until I found one that I really liked. The system pasted my logo onto different card designs.

See, I made this card all by my lonesome without needing a PhD in Logo Design. What do you think? Pretty neat, huh?

fast dances

I’m learning a slew of fast dances at my dancing class and I’m lovin’ them. I prefer fast dances even if I haven’t eaten chocolate to make me hyper  . Slow dances like waltzes put me to sleep on my feet.

For the past few weeks, we’ve been jiving to some pretty hot, current tunes. Fast dances require lots of stamina without which you will soon be breathless and you just won’t be able to last through them.

I like the challenge of fast dances. See, your mind has to be as quick as your feet. Even before you can take the next step, you must know in your mind what the next series of steps are. Otherwise you won’t be able to keep up to the beat and you’ll be completely lost.

Our teacher is a little sadistic in that she makes us practise the same dance like four times in a row with breaks that last as long as it takes her to hit the replay button  . She’s wierd!!

Yep, there’s barely enough time to catch our breaths and she’s onto us again. Those who can’t take the drill will just walk out to the patio to catch their breaths and hope she doesn’t come barking at them for slacking off, the slave driver  !

Go on, give it a shot and post your answer as a comment. Try it just for fun. I’ll post the answer later.

07.07.07

Hey, it’s 07.07.07!

It’s the kind of crazy date that drives everyone to get married to whoever they can grab a hold of. I can’t see the rationale behind that but I guess people do get married for all the wrong reasons sometimes.

I think it’s largely the influence of movies and romance novels. I remember a teacher telling us that some people are not in love with the person but are in love with the concept of love. The idea of it is so appealing that the mind uses that to justify the act.

Makes complete sense to me. With our noses buried in romance novels, how we have romanticized about being whisked away by a devastatingly handsome prince on a white horse to live happily ever after in his palace in our dreams?

What better day for that to happen than 07.07.07  ?

move aside, Johnny

With so many blockbuster movies on right now, I’m pretty sure there’ll be no shortage of ideas for costume parties this year. We don’t celebrate Halloween on a big scale here, but there’s certainly many a theme party going on.

I’ve been to a number of those but I’ve noticed only a handful would actually take the trouble to dress up. To encourage more people to join in the fun, those who do dress up will automatically get entered into the Best Dressed contest.

While I’d love to dress up, I’ve never felt inspired by the choice of costumes. There are very few costume shops here where I can get a decent piece to wear.

But I’ve found the perfect place for Costumes now at HalloweenExpress.com. Well, they’re not just about Halloween costumes. They have a whole range of costumes, accessories, even props for any age for any occasion or theme.

Browsing the site makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. I wish someone would invite me to a costume party now  .

Whatever reservations I had before about dressing up and making a complete fool of myself have just flown out the window. Move aside, Johnny, here comes Captain Jack Sparrow!

fun dressing up

McDonalds has gone Shrek-y. I only realized this when I heard a bunch of kids pointing excitedly at the ‘green ear’ hairbands that the servers were wearing.

Come Halloween, I’m sure the green Shrek-y outfit will be a big hit along with the donkey and Princess Fiona ones too. Harry Potter outfits will fit in nicely with the magical theme and probably be much sought after as well.

HalloweenStore.com has a great selection that the kids would enjoy browsing. In fact, with the number of great summer blockbusters due out soon, the kids will have a ball trying to decide who to dress up as.

As for us grown-ups, we’re going to have a ball at the movies too. Better start budgeting now if you’re not assured of free tickets  .

the making of a fool

Darn, I’d totally forgotten today’s April Fool’s Day. It being Sunday, I’ve been home most of the day and not met anyone I know. But if this had been a weekday, I would be out and about and likely to have pulled a prank or two.

One of the best pranks I’ve pulled was when I called one of the marketing guys at work pretending to be a disgruntled customer.

I told him I was unhappy that he’d missed his appointment with me and made me waste two hours of my precious time. He was stumped and tried to recall my name (a fictitious one, of course) and the time of our appointment.

Not wanting to give him too much time to get his facts together, I went on and on about how I was going to bring this matter up with his boss, and that I was thinking of canceling out on our contract, yada yada and the whole nine yards. He was clearly confused but very apologetic.

The toughest part was trying to keep him from hearing the giggling from the bunch of girls behind me. We’d all ganged up to give him a hard time! And I was the chosen one to execute our little prank, and only stopped after we all agreed we’d gotten enough apologies from him for the hard time he always gave us  . Poor guy!
