long drive

I’ve been driving my son to college this week. I’ll be doing that till I can get him a spot on the college bus. Not that I mind driving him.

It’s just that it’s such a long drive and I get stuck in the early morning rush hour which really stresses me out. By the time I get home, I’m too tired to go the gym. Duh!

And I hate missing my workouts because it’s the very thing that keeps me sane and helps reduce my stress!

those darned telemarketers

Times must be really bad. I’m getting loads of phone spam and all sorts of telemarketing calls selling anything from holiday cruises to spa bookings to health insurance. Yeah, right.

I know these people are just doing their jobs, and I appreciate that they’ve got themselves a real job rather than going to rob a bank. But I honestly don’t have the time to listen to their endless scripts… especially not when I’m driving and in a rush to pick up the kids.

I don’t have the heart to shout at these people, much as I’m tempted to sometimes. But I’d sure like to get my hands on the companies that sell our information!! That sure would relieve a lot of stress for me  .

all set to go again!

I’m all rested and ready for another day out tomorrow entertaining our visitors from out of town. Wouldn’t it be nice if every day could be this carefree and enjoyable, doing stuff that doesn’t stress you out?

I’m not sure where we’ll be going but it always works out to be a lot of fun. Not having a set agenda is really a neat way of avoiding stress. The malls are less crowded on the weekend so it’s relatively easy to keep an eye on the kids and not worrying about leaving someone behind.

I mean, we can take our sweet time to window-shop and linger over lunch now that the kids are a little older and able to take the crazy shopping hours we set.

drink tea to de-stress

I love drinking tea. Many of you know that. Each day, I actually brew a different type of tea for a bit of variety.

So one day, it could be oolong, the next, Earl Gray, and then Japanese green tea. I have a cupboard full of tea to choose from.

I find that drinking tea calms me down. It’s a bit of a comfort drink for me. No matter how busy I am, a few sips of tea as I’m headed out the door actually perks me up.

Try drinking tea if you’re stressed. It’s also got a ton of other health benefits so you may be getting more good out of it than you bargained for  .

why you should shop on weekdays if you can

I wasn’t going to go out today seeing as how hot and hazy it is. But I really do want to do my groceries on weekdays instead of weekends. I’ve really gotten tired of the parking problems, bumping into shopping carts, the long lines at checkout, …

I have the luxury of shopping on weekdays because I work from home. But in recent weeks, I’ve been procrastinating over shopping till the weekends and it’s gotten into a nasty habit. When I get to the store on weekends, I stress myself out and end up wishing I’d done my shopping earlier.

When the store is less crowded, I can think better and stay more focussed on what I need to buy. When I’m in there during the weekends, I just want to get out as quickly as possible. So I end up forgetting to buy stuff I need, and then I beat myself up over having to run another errand to get what I’ve missed.

If it’s possible at all, try to get your shopping done on weekdays. Then when you go out during the weekends, your mind is freer and you’re in a better frame of mind to have a good time with your family.

breakfast with an old friend

Ah, there’s nothing like spending a leisurely morning out at breakfast with an old friend. It’s not very often that I get to do this, but I’m hoping that we’ll be able to meet up like once a week.

She and I go back a long way but we’ve seldom had the luxury of a quiet breakfast. So it’s kinda nice to not have to be in a rush for a change and to just sit and sip coffee.

coffee break

I’ve just confirmed breakfast with my girl friend for next week. Since she left her job, we’ve been able to meet much more often. She’s still single so she has plenty of time on her hands when she’s not traveling or meeting her friends.

So it’s kinda nice that we can have a leisurely breakfast almost every week when my kids are in school. The cafe we go to is nice and quiet on weekdays when everyone’s at work.

So we just end up having another cup of coffee and talking for hours and not stop. Hahaha. If not for the fact that I have to go pick up my kids around noontime, we’d be there even longer.

I find that talking relieves stress because you’re basically letting everything out - like the daily frustrations that build up over time. Once you get it off your chest, it becomes less of a stress factor right away. It’s almost like you’ve set it free and it’s no longer there to bother you.

how to avoid last-minute errands

Being a mom has taught me more than a few things. One of them is to do magic, I mean, be ready for anything - whether it’s last-minute school supplies, gas in the car or a home medical kit for those minor spills.

In my little first aid kit, for instance, I’ve got mosquito repellent, cotton wool, ointment and plenty of band-aids. You must always have plenty of band-aids. They are the cure-all even for imaginary cuts and bruises  .

I learnt a long time ago that it doesn’t pay to run 200 errands a week for last-minute stuff that you could’ve so easily bought extra of and kept aside, just in case.

stress-free day

Okay, there, I’ve just wasted an entire afternoon listening to the Backstreet Boys’ “Inconsolable”. Looks like I’m hooked, I can’t stop singing and it’s all my own fault for putting on a little entertainment to brighten up my day at the computer.

I got a couple of hours’ reprieve from my bus runs because one of the kids’ activities got cancelled. So I thought I’d put on some music so I’ll be inspired to work harder.

Yeah, right! I’m so destressed now I just haven’t got much done. Did someone say a little stress is good?

5 ways to reduce festive stress

Festive seasons are fun but they stress me out somewhat. I’ve been unusually busy since the new year and so I really am not much in the mood for getting stuck in traffic competing to buy festive fare and getting the house to look halfway decent for visitors dropping in by the hoards.

So I’ve decided to take the easy way out not to stress myself too much:

  1. Instead of baking up a storm, I’m doing store-bought. Yep, they cost more than home-made but I’ve saved myself loads of work.
  2. I’m leaving everything to almost the last minute to find out where the best places and prices are to buy stuff.
  3. If my neighbor’s going to buy some of the same stuff I intend to buy, I put on my poor puppy dog’s eyes and ask her if she’s okay buying for me as well. Saves me a trip.
  4. Get the kids to help out with the easy stuff while I’m busy with other things.
  5. Don’t make commitments about where I’ll be during the festive holidays. That way, I’m not stuck with obligations I may not want to meet when the time comes.

Yay, I think I’m doing good and deserve a pat on the back. Softly now! My back is aching from clearing out the clutter and spiffing up the house.
