energy-saving is in, make it your business

I’ve noticed many companies are going, or at least trying to go green this year. For one thing, I can’t afford to forget to bring my eco-bags with me when I go shopping. Different stores have designated different days of the week when they will no longer issue plastic bags to you when you make your purchase.

Yeah, admittedly I used to forget to bring my eco-bags along but these days, I really can’t afford to do that any more or I’ll be lugging my groceries piecemeal to my car and that certainly won’t be pretty  . Initially some stores were kind enough to give out free recyclable bags with purchases exceeding a certain amount. But not any more!

With so many businesses on the verge of going green, 2010 seems set to become the year for investors to turn their attention to energy efficiency companies. If you’d like to launch a profitable business in the energy saving sector, you can get more information from the engin blog where there are detailed discussions of the wealth of opportunities out there.

Meantime, the idea is to try and find ways to recycle and reuse stuff instead of throwing it someplace where it’ll clog up the environment.

golden earfuls

I gotta tell you, apart from eating too many mandarin oranges this past week, I’ve been hearing too much gossip about relatives and too much advice about investing in precious metals. Not that I know much about precious metals in the first place but if someone wants to bore me with it, fine!

So now after earfuls of financial advice, I’m left wondering if I should buy gold bullion or if I can even afford to in the first place. True, gold is gaining its place as a good investment in these shaky economic times. And it would certainly be something to look at if you have money stashed away that’s not doing much.

price comparisons made easy for moms

Those of you who are regular readers of this blog know that I’m a stickler for child safety. From day one, I’ve insisted on strapping my kids into their car seats and when they got older, I would ensure they put on their seat belts before I even start the car.

It’s true, when you have kids, there are so many things to buy. Of course, with the current state of the economy, it’s always wise to compare prices before you buy anything for your child, be it car seats or baby carriers.

It’s easy to do your price comparisons at ShopWiki because they present results for every store on the internet. Traditional shopping sites will only show you stores that have paid for their service, but ShopWiki finds everything and anything that’s on sale on the internet. Quite a handy tool, I must say!

Frankly if you’re the mother of young kids, you probably won’t have time or energy to be dragging your kids with you from store to store to compare prices for stuff you need to buy. Searching online makes it a cinch. You just need to find a time when your babies are asleep and then shop till you drop  !

what I heard

I dislike going to the bank. The long lines, the slow service, the lack of air-conditioning all make me want to get out as quickly as I can. But the reality of it is that, even on a good day, there’s still a line and I still have to sit and wait for my number to come up.

I was sitting near the reception counter the other day when someone came in to ask about buying gold coins. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but he and the bank officer were talking quite loudly and so I was privy to the information exchanged.

Amazing what you can learn about investing if you sit near the reception counter  .

penny-pinching inspiration

I was supposed to meet my girlfriend for coffee this morning. I messaged her late last night and got her reply this morning that she was on her way to another coffee morning.

Oh, never mind, I’ll go crawl the mall on my own. Lately I’ve become incredibly conscious of my spending. With the bad economy and all, most of us are affected in one way or another unless you have millions stashed away. Personally I’m getting down to some serious penny-pinching.

Thought I’d share some tips I came up with as I was browsing at the mall (my pupils dilating at every price tag).

1. Compare brands, compare prices. I usually buy a certain brand of rice noodles. Whenever I need to top up my supply, I automatically reach for it. Lately I’ve been looking around and noticed it’s more expensive than some others. I wonder if the other brands would taste as good.

Then I remembered my neighbor had brought over a plate of fried rice noodles for me recently (she knows I love fried noodles, bless her ;) . And she’d mentioned that she uses a house brand of rice noodles. Mmm, I remember that plate of noodles had tasted pretty good.

See, it doesn’t mean that if you’ve always been using one brand, you must stick with it forever. Don’t prejudge other brands, give them a try. You never know, it could turn out to be equal or better quality for less money.

2. Wait for the sale. Unless you’re in dire need for an item, don’t rush to buy. Forget the misconception that sales are for the poor folks. I know for a fact that it’s the rich folks that make a dash for the sales (that’s how they got rich!).

I’ve had my eye on a new pair of shoes. I’ve tried it on and love it, but I’m procrastinating. Why pay more when you can pay less?

3. Do it yourself. Eating out can get costly. For the same amount of money or less, you could cook more meals or feed more people.

I love the roast chicken at this place called Dave’s. I thought they made the yummiest chicken and had many a fulfilling lunch there during work break. The price seemed pretty reasonable at the time.

One night, I took the whole family there and the price multiplied by x family members burned a hole in my pocket. Ouch! Since then, I figured there had to be a better way. And there is. Now I make the best darned roast chicken in town!

Okay, that’s all I have for now. Are you a newly-inspired penny pincher too? Great, let’s pool our resources. Drop your penny-pinching tips into the comments box and let’s work on it together ;) . What do you say?

investing in precious metals

I hate waiting at the bank so when I do have to go, I look around for ways to entertain myself. So you’ll find me watching people, scrutinizing banking flyers, talking to the person sitting next to me or when all else fails, listening in to questions that people ask the information officer if I happen to be sitting near enough.

Many of the questions these days seem to be centered around investing in precious metals. After listening in to a few queries, I have a vague idea what it’s about.

But there’s always more information available online at Monex Deposit Company and if you’re really serious about investing in precious metals, you can always talk to their consultants.

exploring old coins

I have to admit I know nothing about coin collecting. I know of people who have an entire collection of certified coins that they plan on passing down to the next generation.

What a grand idea! If I had all the space in the world to house a cabinet full of old and rare coins from exotic places, I’m sure I’ll be a much more popular person.

I do enjoy looking at rare coins though and if someone were to spend the time to explore the history behind those coins with me, that’d be even more exciting. But frankly who has the time these days?

empty-handed

You know, every single year when I’ve gone to pay my car insurance, I’ve never let their office empty-handed. They’ve always rewarded me with a gift for being their loyal customer.

True, they’re not big expensive gifts, just little things like a face towel, an umbrella or a small backpack, just enough to make the customer feel just a little bit appreciated and to make a mental note to go back again next year. Know what I mean?

This year was different. They didn’t give me the gift I’d come to expect. I thought they’d overlooked it and decided to ask them. The clerk shook his head. I went like, no gift? He shook his head again and replied no.

Just a no, no explanations, no apologies and they let a loyal customer walk out the door… just like that. Tsk, tsk, tsk, don’t you just love wonderful customer service like that!!
